R&R – Just What the Doctor Ordered!

Well, it has been two weeks since I completed the Disney Marathon. The recovery from the immediate soreness post marathon was actually pretty quick. That only lasted about four days or so. Why? I think because I loaded up with proteolytic enzymes immediately following the race, as well as in the weeks following. My right calf is still hurting a few weeks later, but I think I know what the problem is. During my training runs for the marathon, I ran against the traffic. If you have ever run in Chicagoland, you know that the streets have gutters and are all angled downward. I believe that I strained a tendon in my right leg by constantly running at an angle. This should not be a big problem to correct because I am married to one of the most experienced sports medicine doctors in the world! If I need Prolotherapy I will get it this week. Right now I am writing this in the airport waiting for our connecting flight in LA. Of course, it is delayed. But trying to stay positive and get some work done. No matter that it is 1:20AM Chicago time! Yikes!

Well, what to do now? My coach, Coach Pete from www.milehighmultisport.com says no running for four weeks post marathon. So that’s what I am doing. He also said he wanted me to do no training – none for the week right after the marathon! Ha! Well, one of my best friends, Marylou (who used to work with us at Caring Medical – in fact, she was the first person that I hired) and her husband John, have a time share in Hawaii. They graciously invited us to spend a week with them in Hawaii – a few days in Kauai and a few days in Maui. We accepted their generous offer. Coach Pete actually told me to sit back, enjoy the sights, and watch the cabana boys! Hum…I didn’t see any…

This trip was just what the doctor ordered!
With no training schedule to follow, no long 22 mile runs, no Hauser Diet book to edit/rewrite, this proved to be an interesting time on an actual vacation for me. Being the Type A person that I am, I was at a loss for a few days. I had a hard time adjusting to the time zone difference, so I would wake up at 3AM every day every day (except the last two days of the trip). I would try to go back to sleep, but I could only stay in the bed until 6AM. As it is dark until 7AM, my husband and I would get out our respective laptops and check email, communicate with the office, write some articles (he worked on our research studies), and yes, I did some exercising – mostly long walks on the beach and a couple three times I worked out in the weight room. Ah yes, this trip was a perfect trip post marathon.

Having never been to Hawaii, I had expectation of leis being placed around your neck as you deplane, hula dancers at a luau, and visions of the movie South Pacific …it was definitely beautiful – not quite the same as my visions – but quite breath-taking, to say the least. I think what surprised me the most was how rural Hawaii was. Much of the land was protected or being farmed.

As we sit in the airport in LA, wondering if the plane is going to arrive or if we will be sleeping on the floor tonight, I think back over the week and fondly remember what I appreciated most about this trip.

1. It is wonderful to have great friends that you can be yourself around and pick up where you left off – even though you have not seen each other for months.
2. Kuai is beautiful from a kayak and hiking – even after 12 hours of flying and 5 hours of sleep.
3. The food in Hawaii is awesome – especially the seafood!
4. Luau’s provide you with a taste of the islands – literally!
5. Whale watching at its finest occurs in Hawaii! What an amazing sight!
6. The scenery in Hawaii is gorgeous – mountainous, ocean, palm trees, beaches…wow!
7. The food is awesome…yes, I am repeating myself – wow was it good!

Here are a few memories of our trip…

Myself with Ross as we discover a beautiful waterfall.
