How's the training going?
Well, you’re probably wondering what happened to
me lately? No postings since the July 4th half marathon.
Well, things are quite busy around here. Caring Medical
is converting from paper medical records to a paperless
system. I have been the project manager of this project
for the last five years. We have been customizing our own
system to use because a Prolotherapy practice is quite
different than the average doctor’s office. We are
getting ready to launch the last part of the project which
is the actual medical records going paperless – which
will happen over the next two months with a lot of work
from us – but it’s exciting! Going paperless
helps streamline your office as well as make patients’ charts
available from any computer. It will also make data management
and statistics easier.
The other big project I am involved
in is the Journal of Prolotherapy! Yes, we decided to start
our own medical journal? Why? Because we want to spread
the word about the life-changing effects of Prolotherapy – to
the entire world! People need to know that there is hope
for their chronic painful conditions – that they
do not need to suffer continually and take pain meds for
the rest of their lives.
This is a huge undertaking, but
we have an outstanding team to get it done. Dr. Hauser
is the Editor in Chief, and we have a great editorial board
of medical doctors and even a veterinarian. Our support
staff is outstanding and working hard behind the scenes
editing, re-editing, and writing articles for the website
(www.journalofprolotherapy.com) as well as the paper journal,
due out Spring 2009. I am the managing Editor making sure
it all gets done and overseeing the project, editing and
writing along with everyone else!
So – how’s
the training going? Well – this
is one of life’s lessons that I never seem to learn – SLOW
DOWN. After my 5:11 finish in the Disney Marathon in January,
I decided I wanted to break 5 hours because I really figured
out what I did wrong the last time. I signed up for the
Whistlestop Marathon in upper Wisconsin on October 11,
2008 . Nice and cool, trail running – it would be
perfect for me! I picked up my training in May and started
ramping up. I completed that Sanibel Half Marathon in July
and training was going great. Until….
TOO MUCH GOING ON….
With all of the above work to do, I have been putting in
very long hours at work and not getting enough rest. My
body was unable to repair itself (this of course is the
20/20 hindsight.) My coach was giving me more and more
miles to run each week from July through Sept. I noticed
that my hamstrings, quads, and legs just didn’t seem
to bounce back from the workouts – in fact, they
were VERY sore making it very difficult even to walk. I
saw some physiotherapists and they both said that they
have never seen such tight hamstrings. I kept running…and
kept hurting. Now my right hip started to hurt, radiating
pain into my thigh. I reduced the running a bit, but the
pain continued. I ran my 16 miler and thought – “this
is just too painful, something is wrong.” (Now aren’t
I smart?) ha!
Long story short – the hip pain didn’t go away.
Being married to an expert sports Prolotherapy physician,
I had an evaluation. He believed that I had a labral tear
in my right hip and gave me Prolotherapy to that area.
I kept running and making things worse. Dr. Hauser told
me to use my best judgment. Don’t run if the pain
is too bad. After I did a 10 miler on Saturday, followed
by a 16 miler on Sunday, I was in bad shape – the
pain was more than normal. I tried training for one more
week – but I knew the writing was on the wall. No
Fall marathon for Marion . So I called it quits. It’s
been two weeks now since I ran. The hip received another
Prolotherapy treatment – this time using PRP (platelet
rich plasma) – boy, was that an experience! Being
the worry-wort that I am, I also received an MRI just to
be sure I didn’t have a femur stress fracture (I
definitely read too much on the internet!). The MRI was
normal. Big surprise. Soft tissue injuries often do not
show up on MRI. I’d need an arthrogram to determine
if I had a labral tear. I decided against it. The treatment
was the same – no running or weight bearing exercise
until pain free.
Well, the above projects continue to progress and I continued
to get no rest – so of course, I got the flu! I don’t
know when I am going to learn to listen to my body. I guess
it’s hard to accept that you are not invincible!
Anyway – I am now realizing that I needed to slow
down, regroup, and begin to enjoy life – not just
work work work and train train train.
So, as I am waiting for this flu to abate, the hip/thigh
pain is better (because I can’t run anyway with a
cold!). I am thinking Monday I will be able to get back
out there. I miss my training friends. I miss the adrenaline
rush. I miss being outside in the beautiful fall weather
of Chicago . But, I know I will get back there…just
needed to take some time to smell the roses.
What’s next? Not sure! But hopefully I’ll be
out there on the running trails and biking the roads in
a short while! I’ll see you on the roads…
